Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
