England along with Welsh Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
